EV Certificates – Validating the Legal Name of an Organization Print

  • 1

The organization name on an EV certificate order must be validated as the organization’s legally registered name before the certificate can be issued.

If the organization name listed on the order cannot be verified using a government business registration database during the validation process, additional information or documentation may be required.

This article explains how to resolve the most common issues with validating organization names, including:

  • If the organization name on the order IS NOT the legally registered name.
  • If the organization name on order IS the legally registered name, but Sectigo has been unable to validate, which can happen when:
    • Registration occurred in a different jurisdiction than where the organization currently operates.
    • The registration agency does not have an online database.
    • The organization is newly created.
    • If the organization is a sole proprietorship or trader.

If the organization name on the order IS NOT the legally registered name
If the organization name on an EV certificate order is NOT the legally registered name, but is an assumed name, (also known as a tradename, fictitious name, or a DBA - “doing business as” name), or is a partial name of the organization,
the organization name must be updated on the order.

NOTE: If an organization has a legally registered assumed name, that name can be listed on the EV certificate if it is validated. However, EV certificates must list the legally registered name as well. When verified, this information appears on the certificate in this format: assumed name (legal name).

To update the organization name on the order:

  • From your Order Confirmation email or correspondence from Sectigo Validation, click Validation Manager

If the organization name on the order IS the legally registered name, but Sectigo has been unable to validate
If the organization name on the order is the legally registered name but Sectigo has been unable to validate, please provide the name of the government registration agency where the organization was registered.

Sometimes validation issues arise when:

  • Legal registration was done in a different state, province, or country than where the organization operates
  • The organization was registered with a local government agency – for example, at a city or county level.
  • The government registration agency does not have a database that can be accessed online.
  • Your organization is newly created.

Under these circumstances, you may be asked to provide a copy of the organization creation document, such as your articles of incorporation, or to simply provide information about where you legally registered the organization name.

To provide information about where your organization is legally registered:

  • From your Order Confirmation email or correspondence from Sectigo Validation, click Validation Manager
